For some reason, I'm never able to transfer the .crs file that MapMyRun saves.  I make the route, select the option to save as a Garmin Course, but then when I try  to put it on my Edge, it always fails.  If I try to transfer it to MotionBased, it says "unrecognized format."

     Am I doing something wrong?

(by the way, I searched "Garmin" "Edge" and "crs" and got no results!)

We test our CRS file upload with the Garmin's Training Center software.  Have you tried loading to you Edge via this mechanism?  FYI, we're working on a new feature that will allow you to upload/download data to/from your Garmin directly from the website, but for now you'll need Garmin's Training Center software to do this.  In-case you don't already have this, it's available as a free download from Garmin's site.

Garmin's GTC software sucks so, so much.  I removed it as fast as I could from my computer because there's nothing at all beneficial about it.

Well, there wasn't, until you said I need it.

The MotionBased Agent is a very slick application that doesn't force you to use the horrible abomination that is the GTC.

    Thanks for the info.

Fundamentally, we are generating what we believe to be valid .CRS files that we expect Motionbased should be able to handle.  Can you post a link to the route that you're trying to import so I can investigate further?

Hi, I too am experiencing the same issues, when I go to import from GTC I am not allowed to select the .CRS file. I exported a file from my Garmin 205 and that had the file extension of .TCX, so I tried that extension on my route, this was also unsuccessful. I too also tried to upload this file to Motionbased and again had no success. I really do think this is a oversight by Garmin, only having directions for somewhere you have been before is a bit useless. Here is the link to my route in the hope something can be worked out. http://www.mapmyrun.com/route/united-kingdom/gloucester/661185866 Of course this could be user error but I can't see any other way from Import / Select file?

Some older versions of Garmin's Training Center software support TCX and not CRS.  However, the lastest version of GTC (available as a free download from Garmin's site) can import both.  Please upgrade to the latest vailable version via this link.

I think this may be due to me using the Mac version of the software, you are probably referring to the Windows versions.

Training Center For Mac Ver. 2.0.3 as of May 04, 2007

     http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-states/oh/cleveland/650136657

     Here's exactly what I tried:

    1) On the map, hover over "Save" and select "Save as Garmin Course"

    2) I put in a goal speed and then click "Get CRS"

    3) MapMyRun whirrs away for a little while eventually generating a Windows download dialog box. I save the .crs file.

    4) I open the MotionBased Agent, and click "Import Files"

    5) I browse for and choose the .crs I just downloaded from MMR.

6a) I choose "Send to connected device"-- in this case, it won't ever transfer the file.

6b) I choose "Send to MotionBased."  In this case, it uploads to MB, but I get an "unrecognized format" error: Seen when one tries to upload Course files, Workout files, TXT files, GPX files with infinite time stamps (INF), Saved Tracks, or any number of files and reasons. The upload is not a supported format. Check out the Application programming interface section for a list of supported formats.

(I get the MB.com error whether or not I choose to allow time conflicts.)

I too am having errors importing the crs file into my new Edge. Could be user error though!  Using Training Center I browse for the CRS file and it doesn't show it. If I manually type in the filename nothing happens.

When using the MotionBased upload tool it gives me format errors also. I have the most recent versions of firmware, TC and Motionbased. But like I said, it could be user error in which case a tutorial would be helpful.

I did 2 things in order to transfer files:

    1) In GTC (Garmin Training Center, I used the latest version, because I downloaded the latest version) I created a file using the file menu export. It creates a file with the extencion tcx. I cannot chose a .crs format.

    2) In MapmyRide I also created a file, but then with the extension .crs. I cannot upload it in GTC as it does not recognise the extension.

What can I do to solve this problem? I'm using the Garmin Forerunner 305 as my device.

    Adri-

Have you updated your GTC from Garmin's website since purchasing the device?  The version that shipped with some of the watches doesn't support CRS files, but the latest version (available as a free download from garmin.com) does allow you to import .CRS files.  Note that in the menus, the option is "import courses".

The Garmin CRS generation works (I've personally been using it for over a year).  Some users are having issues with the Garmin software to transfer the file to your device, but we're working A-ok from our end.

We will be adding some more features and making this easier to use as time goes on, but if you're comfortable launching a seperate app the load the file to the device you should be good to go.

    Jeff,

I downloaded the latest version (version 3.2.3) from the Garmin website (language Dutch). So, that should be okay. I have a menu option under Bestand (= file) in order to import & export Geschiedenis (= history), import & export Trainingen (= workout) and import & export Trainingsprogramma's (= courses).

The files I can export all have the extensions tcx.

The files I can import have the extension:

    tcx or hst (for importing history);

    tcx or wkt (for importing workout);

tcx or crs (for importing courses).

    I'm getting very confused!

Are you in contact with Garmin about this?  If not I will send them an email.

In this case you'll want to choose 'import courses', and import the CRS file that you generated from this site.  Have you generated your CRS file here and tried this?

    Jeff,

I did and it works. I can import files in the Garmin Training center which I created at your site and transfer them to my device!

However, now the other way around. In other words, I have a run or bikeride in my Garmin Forerunner 305, I uploaded it to GTC. I can see in the menu under History that the run or bikeride has been transfered from my device. I would like to export my run or bikeride as a crs file now.

What did Garmin support tell me: Training Center will only export .tcx files. These files can still be read by anyone who uses Training Center or Motion Based.

You may be able to backdate the software to a previous version that had those export file extensions. Be advised, you may loose some, or all, of your previous data by doing so. Be sure to export your history, workouts and courses first. You will then need to uninstall Training Center. Once it is uninstalled, and you have rebooting your computer, please visit http://gpsinformation.org/perry/forerunner/. Then click on TrainingCenter_314.exe to download and install an older version of Training Center.

    Not a nice solution.

My suggestion would be: Can you arrange that your site allows .tcx files to be uploaded too?

By the way I also tried something else: At your website I chose Import / From Garmin GPS. Than you can select Find Devices. However, I get the following message: The plug-in was not unlocked successfully. How can I let this option work?

    I'm almost giving up.

    Hi Adri-

I'm sorry to hear about the problems that you've experienced.  I'm glad to hear that you are now able to import your CRS files...that's certainly a step in the right direction.

As for importing data from your Garmin,  our new web based Garmin uploader should help with this, assuming that the route you want is stored on your device.  You can find more information about this here.

Note however, that this new tool sometimes has problems with Internet Explorer, so I encourage you to try Firefox if you haven't already.  The web updating tool also requires that you download and install the plugin from Garmin's website- have you tried it?

Thanks for letting us know about your experiences in using you GPS device with our site.  This is one of the areas we're working hard to improve, and input from users such as yourself really helps us improve.  We're also really excited about these new features.  I just got back from a run myself and am saving my training data right now Smile.

Is this the problem with Internet Explorer you are refering too?

I think by the way, when I'm able to upload my runs and bikerides I will be even more enthousiatic about your site.

What brower are you using when trying to upload your routes?  For this preview version, we recomend that you use the Firefox browser.  When you first use the feature, you'll be prompted to download and install plugin software from Garmin, which you'll have to do first if you haven't already.

Here is another runner from the Netherlands. Friday I ordered my Garmin 305. At http://www.blokesstuff.eu they sell it for a very good price. For people in the Netherlands the price is always important Cool. I hope everything will go fine with the shipping and I hope the taxman thinks it is a gift. However I am not sure if I have to pay tax for odering in Europe (England).

I hope you will upgrade your site to the number 1 site in the world for runners. Supporting the Garmin 305 would make a big step. Good luck with all the good work!

    Hi Maurice-

Congrats on the purchase.  Just to be clear, we do support importing your data from the Garmin 305.  However, this feature currently requires the Firefox web browser, which is a free download, and the browser we already recommend for best experience on the site.  Adri is waiting for the import tool to work with Internet Explorer, which we are currently working with Garmin to fix.

    Maurice,

I have been using the Garmin Forerunner for almost one year now and I'm still very exited about it. I previously had a Polar S625X, but the accuracy of the foodpad was not good (always differences in the distance I ran) and what matters for a runner is the distance! And of course the Polar does not integrate a map. I have been trying several sites now for uploading my running files. Motionbased is great, but you cannot download a track you created yourselve. That is the big advantage of MapmyRide (-Run etc.). I used MapmyRide when I had to cycle from Garderen to Breda (http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/netherlands/garderen/448636897). I created my own ride and with my Forerunner 305 on the bikemount in front of me on my steering wheel of my bike I was able to follow the route very closely. I'm now waiting MapmyRide to solve the upload facility in the Internet Explorer so I will be able to transfer my files from my watch to the website of MapmyRide.

hi gentlemen I am back from my holidays and found my new and shiny 305 in my postbox! Together with my girlfriend I did some slow runs and must admit it is very nice. Is there any news on the progress for the 305 users? Is there a thread or manual that I can read?

Adri nice to meet you here! I have a question. You posted "I created my own ride and with my Forerunner 305 on the bikemount in front of me on my steering wheel of my bike I was able to follow the route very closely.".

Does this mean that you first draw a route on the computer and then used your Garmin to guide you in the field?

    Maurice,

sorry to get back to you so late. It is correct to draw a route on the computer and then use the Garmin to guide you in the field/on the road. However, uploading / downloading from map my ride / map my run is slighlty difficult. I now found a site called: www.gpsies.com which is very convenient/user friendly to use. Just look at the following link: http://www.gpsies.com/map.do?fileId=nmymlpxxcbqgfsfm. This link is a ride I did which I uploaded from my watch to the website. However, I also did this the other way around, which worked ok too. In other words, you can download this track to your Garmin too. It is of course also possible to create a ride/run on www.gpsies.com yourselve and download your own created ride from the www.gpsies.com website to the Garmin.

    Good luck,

    Adri
