I think it would be a worthwhile addition to allow one to import a map overlay (similar to Google Earth)- even if only temporarily to trace out a route. For instance, I have state park maps in .JPG and PDF forms that contain route information which, I would like to overlay in MapMyHike and then trace the route out. As long as the overlay is drawn to scale, I would be able to do this. And keeping the import/overlay temporary desolves many copyright issues.

I think this is very useful for hiking- since the maps you use are really road maps- when you get into state parks etc, there is no accurate way of tracing out a route unless you meticulously map out your route via GPS. With this as an alternative, individuals with digitized trail maps could use them to trace out the trails accurately.

This sounds exactly like what I'm after too.  I often go running on public trails, but those trails are not mapped by GoogleEarth (or their downstream mapping provider).  (The trails are also enclosed with trees so its a guessing game trying to trace them in the satellite view mode).

Thanks again for a fantastic site.

I agree! I have many overlays in my Google Earth of many of my local running routes. Google Earth doesn't have a hi-def image of my area and it is hard to guess the routes in the MapMyRun maps.

There is a 20k trail race in a couple of weeks and I want to publish the event to MapMyRun.com, but can't (easily) map the path without an overlay to trace.

    P.S. I love this site!! :)

I agree; I use my local park to do most of my running. I have a .pdf file with all of the trails, but I often do a lot of guess work on mapmyrun while looking at my map in another window. If I could overlay the .pdf file and "trace" it on mapmyrun, that would be great.

    Thanks for the great site!
