I sometimes run most of a previously mapped run, but then add an extra loop or turn to it, increasing the distance. I would like to be able to  add checkpoints to the mapped run stored in the system instead of having to start all over for each variant of an existing run. I appreciate being able to move existing checkpoints, but I'd like to also be able to insert and delete checkpoints as well.

I was wondering exactly the same thing - especially when plotting my hill runs, where I do the same route each week but add one hill a week. Any suggestions would be great!

You should be able to do it. If you go to edit your existing route, then click on the point you want to add a point near, the little box should pop up. The tab to the right says "Add/Delete" and you can choose to add a point before or after that one. Most of the time it works ok, but I find (and this may be user error) that sometimes when i go to edit an existing route, its gets royally screwed up somehow where the points get disconnected and I can't get it back together. Good luck!
