I just spent 2.5 frustrating hours trying to enter a route that goes out on a path, then makes a loop, and returns on the same path.  I entered it twice, and deleted both copies as unworkable. Here are comments and some suggested enhancements form my experience.

In my first attempt, I uploaded the route from my Garmin 705.  I then entered notes for transitions, water, parking, start and stop.  Since the route already existed, I could not distinguish the outbound and inbound points on when the route overlaps.  I suggest allowing people to at least see the mileage marker associated with the point, so that they will know if they are getting the outbound or inbound point.  A better solution would be to allow people to choose whether they want to use the outbound or inbound mileage marker.

In my second attempt, I enterred all the points for the route by hand.  Again, when I entered points where the route overlaps, sometimes it chose an existing point rather than creating a new point.  As one example, rather than putting the stop marker at the end of the route, it decided was associated with the beginning mileage.  These kinds of things make generating a route slip from the notes unworkable.   A possible solution here would be to have a create mode where you are adding new points in increasing order of mileage, and an edit mode where you are working with pre-existing points.

If anyone has successfully done a route that loops back on itself with a reasonable cue sheet, I'd appreciate knowing how you did it.

I'm new at this but I've had the same problem -- it's frustrating because we tend to overlap at the end of a long ride ! Have you found any ideas?

I have a loop on MapMyRide (see link below).  The only thing I see wrong with it is that every other mileage marker is the return mileage.  You'll see that the first one from the start is 25 and the next one is 5, and so on.  I didn't pay much attention to it since this is a route I take often and didn't really need the mileage markers.  I didn't do anything special when I made it so I'm not sure why you are having the problem.  Good Luck!
