Once you're on Highway 1 going north, you cycle through Morro Bay to Cayucos. Turning right on to Old Creek Road, the climb begins past Whale Rock Reservoir through the foothills to Highway 46. Steeper sections of the climb are 10% to 12% over a 2 mile section. Once on Highway 46, you gradually climb for 1 mile to the summit at a little over 1700 feet. The 10 mile descent is on good pavement all the way to Highway 1. Turning left (south) on to Highway 1, you follow the coast back through Cayucos and Morro Bay to Cuesta College.
